Monte del Lago
Monte del Lago is a wonderful medieval village, lying on a mountain near the lake Trasimeno. The village was inhabited by fishermen, and it still keeps its cultural and artistic heritage intact.
One of the most remarkable historical beauties in the area is the church Sant’Andrea, built in the 14th century in the Umbrian Romanic style. The religious building is simple, rural in the forms, a typical one-nave-church.
Inside the shrine you’ll find a wonderful fresco: the great crucifixion (today only the central part of it is still visible) ascribed by the critic Pietro Scarpellini to the Master of Monte del Lago, an unknown artist from Perugia, who was very famous for his popular works in that time.
During the centuries Monte del Lago has been the perfect oasis for many artists and writers, who have been deeply inspired by the place.
Among them Giovanni Antonio Campano, a famous writer who composed his essay "De Felicitate Trasimeni" in this town. Vittoria Agnoor Pompili's art, as well as Puccini’s music are connected to this place, together with the life of Bartolomeo Borghi, author of Italy’s first geographic atlas, who was born in the near village of Zocco.
Two important soldiers of independence wars – Giuseppe Danzetta and Giuseppe Pompili – were born in this town too. The inhabitants of the area have always defended the unique beauty of this nature, with its simple stones and its sunsets on the water of Trasimeno.
Nel corso degli anni, Monte del Lago fu terra madre, rifugio e ispirazione per molti personaggi noti nel panorama delle arti, della letteratura, della storia...
